Review of "Snew You"

by Mari

After punishing you with Foscor’s black metal yesterday, I’ll be good today, I won't post any black metal, and I’ll feed you with some more juicy rock.

Snew is a US hard rock band from Hollywood ("that" Hollywood) and Snew You (2008) is their debut, self-produced album. I received the CD more than one week ago as a late birthday present from a friend, but I only listened to it yesterday night.

When I first saw the photos of the band members I said to myself “Puah, another boring sleazy rock band, another clone of Motley Crue” (and I don’t like Motley Crue …) and mentally put the CD aside. Then I listened to it and … RAAAAAAWWWWWK!

Well, nothing revolutionary and nothing new.

Just a solid, super-juicy slab of AC/DC, Motorhead, The Stooges, MC5, Ramones, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, etc. etc., all mixed together and “smacking you in the face with raw electrified monster rock and roll”.

The Snew guys may seem a clone of AC/DC, especially for the peculiar voice of the Snew singer, Curtis Don Vito (I hope it's a nickname ...). However I have that “clone” impression only when I hear Airbourne (nice, eh, but far too clone for my taste …). I think Snew are a bit more original, and they play very well.

Apparently they are about to complete the recording of a new album. Let’s see.

Well, please, give them a try.

And remember this as a birthday present for a rock-addicted friend: with such stuff you never make mistakes!

Review of "We Do What We Want"

by Andrea

True Rock comes from the heart. And balls. It doesn't come to you, it smashes you in the face. It doesn't speak to you, it shouts and makes your body move, even when you're close to being dead. Rock 'n' Roll is the devil's fuel for hell's fire. And rockers have hell's fire inside their souls and that keeps them going. Not fame, not trend.

That's why I HATE bands like Airbourne that use Rock to pull out mediocrity. They're the death of rock. Guys like Snew, whose debut "Snew You" was posted on the swamp by the Mystical Goddess Mari and which you should check, have boiling whiskey and gasoline instead of blood. And they play Rock that could make even the most jaded bastard between you scream, shout and dance.

Their major influence is Bon Scott era AC/DC, but they have also a lot of Led Zeppelin, MC5, Aerosmith or simple Chuck Berry on steroids in their songs. And goddamn, they rock like heel. Everything good about their debut is pumped up to 300% here. Their singer Curtis screams like a banshee on a coke binge, the Angus Young-o-phile guitars drop one super riff after the other, the rhythmic session will make you shake like you have the crabs. It's just perfect.

I swear on my collection of Sabbath albums that I cannot listen to this album without shaking my booty and jumping around like a teenager. It's the best up lifter of the month, or possibly the year. GO SNEW!!!

Strutter Zine

Review of "We Do What We Want"

Strutter Zine

SNEW from California released their debut CD 'Snew you' 2 years ago, causing quite a stir in the Hard rock scene, because the album was named by several Glam/Party/Sleaze zines as album of the year, because after all, the band was playing a sorta updated 80s Sleazy Metal style.

Now they are back with 'We do what we want'. This album was engineered and mixed by ED CHERNEY (STONES, BOB DYLAN, ERIC CLAPTON) and it definitely sounds quite huge. Musically pure ballsy Hard rock a la AC/DC, AIRBOURNE and RHINO BUCKET, yet with a sorta Sleazy Metal touch here and there.

10 hard-hitting tracks are included and from start to finish this is bang-your-head type of stuff, sounding like an improved and updated version of QUIET RIOT, KROKUS and of course AC/DC, yet tougher and meaner in it's final approach.

If you want to rock hard, then go for SNEW.

Review of "Snew You"

by John Boden

Let us simply begin with their name, Snew. Odd and original and simply catchy. This band takes their name as the cornerstone of their entire self-directed PR takeover. Their campaign is entitled "SnewWorldOrder," their debut CD Snew You - you get where I'm going. So after getting a few points from me for their oddly clever moniker, I began to assess their music.

The meat of the matter is that Snew You is a beeftastic platter of sleazy goodness. No gristle, no fat. Just ass shaking rawk and roll. Ten tenacious tracks of swirling sonic fun where depth and image have been eschewed for the bombastic sluttiness of the groove. These guys devoured every riff AC/DC ever laid down, every roadhouse boogie stomp Bo Diddley spat out and topped it all with Curtis Don Vito's vox which sound like fisticuffs between Bon Scott (AC/DC) and Jesse James Dupree (Jackyl).

I could dissect every track here but as with most offerings in this style of music, they really aren't that far removed from one another. I can forgive that, in fact I'd rather listen to a zillion cds full of this style of good time rock than one EP of that Nickelback drivel that saturates the corporate radio waves.

The bottom line is if you like your hard rock unfettered and fun, fast and furious, and groovy as Hell... then get Snewed.

Tastes Like Rock

Review of "Snew You"

by Michael Meade

Snew could be summed up as Def Leppard meets Guns n Roses (before they starting sucking)... but why stop there? Good vocals, tasty guitars, good bass lines, and tight drums mixed with real party lyrics make one good bang your head, party all night rock album!

TLR! hasn't received any really slamming party rock for a few months, and this reviewer is glad Snew stepped up and delivered!

Now it's time to finish this review so I can jam to Snew You one more time before before my next review.

Snew You's excellent ten tracks are "Stand Up High", "Got Love", "Snew You", "She's A Real Gunslinger", "Kick Me Over", "Head Trauma", "Electric Is The Law", "Get It To Go", "Vibrator", and "Heavy Water".

Top tracks are the title track "Snew You", "She's A Real Gunslinger", "Kick Me Over", "Electric Is The Law", and "Heavy Water".

Snew's Snew You gets an enthusiastic 4 outta 5!

Tastes Like Rock

Review of "We Do What We Want"

by Michael Meade

Snew is back and channeling AC/DC and The Stooges with all their might! We Do What We Want is what The Stooges would've sounded like with Bon Scott on vocals, the party rock flows like a raging river seamlessly from one song to another in a ten song bash. Vocals are solid and electric, backed by excellently hard instruments that would drive a bar to destruction in a glorious blaze! Pacing doesn't give you a rest... but you won't care as you'll have to force yourself to sit still from dancing and thrashing to Snew's signature sound, a sound that is best when speakers are turned all the way up. Lyrics are a perfect blend of living your life for yourself, partying, drinking, fighting, and hooking up just the way hard party rock should be.

Choice cuts are the title track, "Private Stash", "Knock It Out Of The Park", and "Power Pack".

Snew gets a solid 4 out of 5 for We Do What We Want.

Uber Rock

Review of "We Do What We Want"

by Matt Phelps

Having blown onto the rockin' out scene back in 2008 with their debut offering 'Snew You', the Californian four piece with the ridiculous name are back with more of the same for Snew 2, 'We Do What We Want'.

The opening barrage of riff action that greets you as 'We Do What We Want' kicks into life with its title track will leave you in no doubt where the main thrust of the next nine songs soon to be following will be coming from. You'll be expecting some fine tuned, high revving, bad boy boogie rock chipped off the same much loved block that's given us the likes of AC/DC and Airbourne and you won't be disappointed, you'll get pretty much what you expect. Yet with that said, Snew are not as straight forward and as easily pigeon hole-able as many other simple sleazy boogie bands. There's elements of some of the Stooges' Raw Power, even some DiAnno era Maiden. In fact in their own words they're "The illigitimate children of Alice Cooper and the Ramones, home schooled by Motorhead". And that's pretty much bang on the money. Not forgetting the AC/DC likeness too of course.

Curtis Von Dito fronts the band with a voice residing somewhere in the central territory between Bon Scott and Rob Halford. A 50/50 growler/howler, like a mash up of 'Down Payment Blues' and 'Exciter'. A voice full of energy and enthusiasm, lifting the album with a vocal gift that's as equally suited to hitting the high notes as it is scratching around in some dirty gutter rawk. With fellow Snewsicians Cat Tate (bass), Mark Ohrenberger (drums) and Andy Lux (guitar) completing the line up, they're quickly into the second track 'Feedback And Distortion'. It's easily the album's most accomplished track, defining not only the essence of songs on offer but also the production values, credited here to audio guru Bobby Owsinski. A rock 'n' roll anthem for head bangin' foot stompers everywhere to get spillin' their beers to.

The smouldering  'Private Stash' echoes the more bluesy hard rock groove of  Widowmaker's 'Stand By For Pain' album ahead of a timely power surge halfway through which sends the needles back deep into the red with the quick fire double hit of 'Get Loud' and 'Knock It Out Of The Park'. Back to back balls out rockers with Von Dito giving his best impression of what Brian Johnson might sound like if he had his bollocks wired to the National Grid. Both 'Pick Up The Ball' and 'Who The Hell Are You' lessen the pace with a few more mellower moments of rock with serious soul before the final sprint of 'Shinebox' kicks up a farewell storm.

Snew are a band extremely comfortable in the genre in which they reside but they're also a band more than aware they're capable of pushing the boundaries slightly by incorporating some more eclectic moments to create and album that revels in the relevance of its title, 'We Do What We Want'. While the current pro runners in the boogie rock race like DC and the O'Keefe boyz have already been wrapped in foil and devoured their Mars Bars, Snew are certainly gonna be a name to remember for the next leg, leading the field well ahead of the competition, these boyz are going places. Get ready for the Snew World Order \m/

The Biggest Letdown

Review of "We Do What We Want"

by Andy

Snew has just come out with a new album called WE DO WHAT WE WANT - and by that they seem to want to rock like AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynard combined. There's a lot of musical influences here, but the majority comes through in the two aforementioned bands. Now, these guys rock. Really hard. There's some good stuff here. If you're the type of guy/gal who wants to relive 80's southern rock, long hair, beer drinking, girlfriend-fighting, stupid-antics-pulling, and rodeos on television, then this is the soundtrack of your life. You need this. And, once you buy it, I'll tell you that you're welcome.

I can only imagine how crazy a live performance from Snew must be. I live in the southern US and I don't think they tour here. Which is interesting because this is their general audience. Home of NASCAR, bootlegging hillbillies, cotton pickers, and assorted redneck references, this music goes over really well here. Where are they from, though? Fuckin' Hollywood. But, it's not where you're from, it's how hard you rock. There's a growing number of southern rock groups coming from Hollywood these days.

Ok, so if you live in or around Hollywood and hear some great southern rock, check out Snew. Oh, and tell 'em that Andy from the Biggest Letdown said hi.

Review of "We Do What We Want"

by Scott Thomas

Wow!!! Another really kewl CD Cover from the Rock Band "SNEW"… I'm taken in by the artwork and design of everything inside and out on this CD/Album Sleeve, Let's see if the music is the same…?

So once again I pop the SNEW CD into my trusty ol' Sony boom-box and let 'er rip. !!! The first song out of the gates is "We Do What We Want" and that isn't a lie either… These tunes come to you at full – tilt. SNEW's rock and roll leaves no apologies in its swaggering wake like in the song "Private Stash". I embrace their solid style and look for a relatively solid execution with each new outing. The song "Power Pack" is another perfect SNEW VIBE… All of the classic SNEW components are here… Andy Lux's ol' skool chunky guitar chords and blues rock lead playing, Cat Tate's driving  bass, Mark Ohrenberger's impeccable consistent drums, and of course, Curtis Don Vito's captivating guttural vocals and lethal shrieks. These dudes are all about rockin' with their socks out, and cranking out "simple but addictive" songs that will have you shakin' a leg all nite long… Little nuances like the tune "Who the Hell Are You" really gets Don's soul-influenced singing in high gear. The production and recording on this album is very tight and stripped down. The guitar work is right on the money too…

If you are looking for intricate guitar work, key changes, changes in time signature (see: Rush, Dream Theater, etc.), experiments with synthesizers, piano interludes, etc. Then this CD may not be for you. However, if you like to cut through all the cheese and just ROCK, then "let's get it on" ! The genius in this music rests largely in SNEW''s minimalist approach. The last song "Shine Box is one if my favorites too.

If you like high-octane rock w/ memorable riffs and lyrics that you can sing along to; then I highly recommend this CD for mass consumption.

Outside The Dial

Review of "We Do What We Want"

by Pitch

With the passing of Chicago’s Q101 and New York’s WRXP, it is evident Rock Radio is on the decline but will Rock music in general soon follow? Not if SNEW has anything to shout about it! Formed in November of 2005 in Hollywood, CA, SNEW embraces what rock is all about; the raw, primal, unabashed and unapologetic sound that defines rock and roll!

SNEW builds on the foundation that was formed by such craftsmen as Rose Tattoo, GirlSchool, Angel Witch and AC/DC. SNEW refuses to accept rock is on the decline and with their second album “We Do What We Want” is a testament to this refusal. When that needed urge to let loose and rock it out, this is the soundtrack. Jump in your IROC, roll down the windows, push the volume past 10 and head to the main drag.
